Journal Club Reflection

Previously to the journal club assignment I had partaken in countless presentations, which led to me feel confident with the task assigned. This assignment was a chance to experience presenting to peers, which is a helpful skill as I wish to pursue a career as a lecturer alongside my aspirations of being a veterinary physiotherapist.

This assignment was a strong point for me as it incorporated group work. Working within a group is a strength of mine, I always excel in team activities; this is also how my communication skills have advanced. I recognise that these skills are transferrable when practicing as a veterinary physiotherapist. Assets to this assignment included my presentation skills, I was clear and confident whilst talking and this was commended during my feedback, I feel I could improve by making my notes clearer on my prompting cards this would enable me to make eye contact with the listeners, the most effective speakers are found to do this (Collins, 2004).

I struggled with aspects of the assignment including evaluating scientific information. As a team we sectioned out parts of the assignment, I asked to not have any scientific material. Reflecting on this now, it was a mistake. I recognised interpreting scientific data my weak point, I should have worked on it rather than avoided it. Given the opportunity again I would select myself to analyse the scientific information. Reading scientific journals and analysing them in order to get more experience will be an important part of my study. I felt nervous and unprepared prior to the presentation because as a group we were not able to practice, studies show that practising will reduce this nervousness (Hyland, 1991).

Next time I will ensure my group sets dates, which everyone can attend to practice therefore reducing nervousness and improving the quality of the presentation, research proves it is a ‘bad’ habit to not do so (Gallo, 2017). This skill for presenting will be vital when pitching my business plan in the future.

To conclude I believe the high grade received showed as a group the level of effort involved in this assignment, in future group tasks I will remain with the same group because of the effective group dynamics.
